What is Calendula?
Commonly known as "marigold, calendula is a versatile herb native to the Mediterranean. For centuries, has been actively cultivated in gardens for use as food and for its healing properties. Identified by its bright orange petals yellow to have medicinal properties, not to be confused with the garden variety of marigold.
The name Calendula stems from the tendency of the plant to bloom on schedule, either once a month or new moon. This annual thrives in cool, temperate climates and grows to a height of 9.20 inches.
What calendula can do for me?
Flavonoids present in marigolds and their inherent anti-inflammatory, astringent, antifungal, antiseptic and lead to an ideal topical agent. It can be applied to the skin to treat boils, rashes, sunburn, skin irritation, insect bites and other skin irritations. Calendula properties make it attractive for the treatment of herbs and soothing the scalp.
How do I can use calendula?
Calendula is commonly found as dried flowers or essential oil. It can be used to create tinctures, ointments, lotions, infused oils and body butters to name a few. When mixed with oils such as olive oil, the effects of calendula have been improved. Products containing Calendula are readily available in health food stores and online – or create your own using one of these recipes!
Calendula Oil infused
- Pack a glass jar with dried marigold flowers
- Cover flowers packed in olive oil
- Cover with a tight lid
- Store the jar in a dark cupboard and shake well every day for two weeks
- After two weeks, strain oil in a clean glass jar or bottle
- Add vitamin E oil as a natural preservative
- Apply directly to the skin, leather and hair
Tip:
Test the oil in a small area to examine allergic reactions
Calendula Cream
- 6 oz calendula infused oil (top)
- 2 ounces of almond oil sweet
- 3 oz shea butter
- 2 oz cocoa butter
- Mix ingredients in a small saucepan over very low heat
- Once the ingredients have melted, simmer for 20 minutes, stirring regularly
- Carefully pour in plastic or glass bottles Let stand
- Apply directly to the skin, scalp and hair
Tips:
Refrigerate to extend the life
Increase or decrease the ingredients to desired consistency
Calendula soothing scalp oil
- 6 oz calendula infused oil (top)
- 2 oz jojoba oil
- 10-15 drops of essential oil of rosemary
- 10-15 drops of tea tree essential oil
- 10-15 drops of essential oil of sage
- Mix ingredients in an applicator bottle moldboard
- Shake well before use
- Apply directly to the scalp
Tip:
Use oil in the scalp to alleviate the conditions of combat scalp and dandruff
