Making your own natural lip balm is easier than you might think. It is also good for your budget to buy commercial products – and you get the advantage of knowing exactly what you are putting into your mouth. Add the healing powers of aromatherapy and essential oils have a winner!
Many commercial lip balms are made with petroleum. Petroleum products have been banned for use in cosmetics in many countries because they contain impurities that can cause cancer and other health problems.
In addition, commercial lip balms and lotions are often designed so that once the effect moisturizing initial gone really dry skin (or lips) you have to keep applying the product (what makes you buy more – Good for sales.)
On the other hand, the vegetable-based skin-natural, moisturizing lip products provide real, healthy non-poison you or drying the skin. You can use a variety of oils and butters to make your own lip balm, and you can even smell with essential oils to a little Pizzaz (not to mention the strengthening of its healing powers!)
Here is a very basic recipe ingredient lip balm three to start.
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or sweet almond oil
- 1 tablespoon grated beeswax (you can use a beeswax candle pure for this)
- 1 capsule vitamin E (400 IU)
Instructions:
- Place the oil and wax in a heatproof bowl (such as a heavy glass mug measure.) Make a hole in the capsule of vitamin E and tighten too much fluid in the oil and wax mixture.
- Place the heatproof bowl in a pot water on the stove and heat over low heat just until the wax melts. Immediately remove from heat.
- Pour the liquid into a small bottle screw cap or lip balm jar or tube. Allow to cool (solidify) before use.
Easy!
Then try these variations to jazz up a bit …
Lip Balm Base:
- Substitute 1 tablespoon shea butter 1 tablespoon of beeswax.
- Use unrefined coconut oil instead of olive oil.
- Add 1 / 2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin for extra moisture.
Aromatherapy Essential Oils:
- Add 2 drops of lavender essential oils to relieve irritation.
- Try 2 drops of essential oil peppermint for a natural tingling freshness.
- Add 2 drops of vanilla essential oil for a delicious, sweet aroma.
A note on oils Essential: Be careful that the oils you use in lip balms and aromatherapy skin care – some may irritate the skin (such as cinnamon and thyme.) Do your research before experimenting!
