What is calendula?
Commonly known as “marigold, calendula is an herb native exceptionally versatile for the Mediterranean. For centuries, has been actively cultivated in gardens for use as food and for its healing properties. Identified by their bright orange and yellow petals have medicinal properties, not to be confused with the garden variety of marigold.
The name is derived from marigold the tendency of the plant to flourish, according to the calendar, either once a month or new moon. This Annual Report flourishes in cold, temperate climates, and grows to a height of 9.20 inches.
Calendula What can do for me?
Flavonoids present in marigold flower and its inherent anti-inflammatory properties, astringent, antifungal, antiseptic and lead to an ideal topical agent. The properties of calendula make it a attractive for the treatment of herbs and soothing the scalp.
How do I use the calendula?
Calendula is commonly found as dried flowers or essential oils. It can be used to create tinctures, ointments, lotions, infused oils and creams body to name a few. When mixed with oils such as olive oil, increase the effects of calendula. Products containing calendula are easily available in health food stores and online – or create your own using one of these recipes!
Calendula infused oil
- Pack a glass jar with dried marigold flowers
- Cover Packed with olive oil flowers
- Cover with a tight lid
- Keep the bottle in a dark cupboard and shake well every day for two weeks
- After two weeks, oil, strain into a glass container or a bottle
- Add vitamin E oil as natural preservative
- Apply directly to the skin, scalp or hair
Tip:
Test the oil in a small area to test for allergic reactions
Calendula Cream
- 6 oz calendula infused oil (top)
- 2 ounces of sweet almond oil
- 3 oz butter shea
- 2 oz cocoa butter
- Mix ingredients in small saucepan over very low
- Once the ingredients are have melted, simmer for 20 minutes, stirring regularly
- Carefully pour onto plastic or glass jars and allowed to stand
- Apply directly to the skin, scalp or hair
Tips:
Store in the refrigerator for longer life
Increase or decrease the ingredients to desired consistency
Soothing calendula oil scalp
- 6 oz calendula infused oil (top)
- 2 ounces of jojoba oil
- 10-15 drops of essential oil of rosemary
- 10-15 drops Essential Oil Tea Tree
- 10-15 drops of essential oil of sage
- Mix ingredients in a spouted bottle applicator
- Shake well before using
- Apply directly to the scalp
Tip:
Use this oil in the leather scalp to relieve scalp conditions and combat dandruff
